Literature

Vaikom Muhammed Basheer

Many prominent Malayalam literature writers hail from Kozhikode, including S. K. Pottekkatt, the most celebrated writer of the city. His award-winning work “Oru Theruvinte Katha” is set in S. M. Street. Vaikom Muhammad Basheer and M. T. Vasudevan Nair, the literary stalwarts had spent most of their life in the city. The Kozhikode Public Library and Research Centre at Mananchira was established in 1996. There are several leading Malayalam publishing houses in the city, which includes Poorna, Mathrubhumi, Mulberry, Lipi and Olive. Several libraries are also located in and around the city. Some other famous writers include Thikkodiyan, P. Valsala Sanjayan, U. A. Khader, M.P. Veerendra Kumar K. T. Muhammed, N. N. Kakkad, Akbar Kakkattil, N. V. Krishna Warrier and M. N. Karassery.

Kozhikode Indoor Stadium

Kozhikode is known as the second Mecca of football. Cricket, basketball, football, volleyball and badminton are other most popular games in Kozhikode. Many international football matches of major football teams were hosted in the E. M. S Stadium in the past. Several international footballers are from Kozhikode including K.P. Sethu Madhavan, Muhamad Najeeb, Premnath Phillips, M Prasannan, Sudheer etc. Indian Olympian footballer, T. Abdul Rahman, popularly known as Olympian Rahman, is from Kozhikode. The Indian team in which Rahman played had reached the semi-final in 1956 Melbourne Olympics The most famous form of football in the city is the seven-a-side form.

P T Usha, the greatest athlete of India hails from Kozhikode. She is often called the “Queen of the Indian track and field”. She is also nicknamed as the Payyoli Express for her remarkable speed. The Usha School of Athletics at Koyilandy is currently run by her. Other sports personalities include Tom Joseph , Premnath Phillips and Jimmy George. The other international badminton players that belong to the city are Jaseel P. Ismail, V. Diju, Aparna Balan and Arun Vishnu.

To promote sports development in India with focus on football the Sports and Education Promotion Trust (SEPT) was established. It commenced operations in 2004 and is based in Kozhikode. The trust has set up fifty centres called “football nurseries” which is spread across thirteen districts of Kerala. Since 2010, Mini Marathon runs have also been organized in Kozhikode and has seen an increase in popularity and participation of around 7000 people every year.
